Frequently Asked Questions
  • Can I watch a class before I enrol my child?

Sorry, no.  Experience has shown us that parents watching classes tend to distract the children, and with so many enquiries every term this could have a big impact, especially when the students
are working towards a performance.  The two week trial period at the beginning of each term gives your child a chance to try us out before committing.

  • Why can’t I pay per class? We might not be able to
    get to them all…

We have to collect your term’s fees in advance in order to be able
to keep Montage running.  We have to be able to plan how to pay the tutors and staff, hire the premises and rent the office.  Also
we have found that paying in advance can make a difference to
how committed families feel to the classes – and regular
attendance is very important to bring out the best in your child.

  • What happens if my child doesn’t enjoy the class!

If your child doesn’t want to carry on after two weeks, or if we or you feel s/he isn’t ready or wouldn’t benefit from the class, we will refund your fees for the rest of the term, minus the cost of the
two classes.

  • Can my child come in for a trial class at the end of
term before we decide whether to join next term?

No. We have found that it is much better for a child to be new
when everyone else is, at the start of term when new groups are forming. Also, (the last) other classes in the term are part of the term’s teaching development or tend to be rather more informal than the rest of term, and therefore doesn’t necessarily give an accurate impression of what classes are like. That is why we run
the two week trial period at the start of every term, to give the group time to settle.

  • Why don’t Montage students do exams?

Montage teachers are qualified to teach examination syllabus but there’s no shortage of schools offering courses leading to exams
and Montage wants to offer an alternative for parents and children who prefer not to participate in that particular method of assessment with the pressures involved in examination study.
Each course carefully develops technique for that age group,
well-balanced with creative development. At Montage we like children to be able to measure their progress by the praise they
get from their tutors and classmates and the applause they get from their enthusiastic audiences when it’s showtime.

  • Why don’t you do ballet and tap?

We do! Till this year we prioritised fun and funkiness – with the small children learning through dancing games and progressing through their favourite pop routines all the way up to super cool Street Jazz as well as the Broadway and West End show routines.  But after more and more enquiries about ballet and tap we have added introductory  tap and ballet classes and will be adding
more dance classes as we develop our dance programme.
Keep watching the website for more information.

  • Why the emphasis on show tunes and routines?

We just love ‘em, they’re the best fun and they combine drama, great tunes and dance especially well. But that’s not all we do.
Our drama classes place great value on storytelling,
characterisation and improvisation, and our Youth Theatre is working on a short play to be presented at the end of the summer term.  Our new “My Turn” event is designed to help your child find his/her own voice and story.

  • Can you help my child prepare for auditions?

If you have a specific audition in mind it is probably best to speak to your child’s tutor or phone the office to discuss your plans.

  • I’d quite like to join one of your adult classes but
there’s no way I could sing and dance in public.
Do I have to be in the shows?

No, of course not.  You are very welcome to come and do a course for your own enjoyment. It’s a brilliant way to increase your fitness and to make friends. But you may surprise yourself and find that when you’ve spent a term or so perfecting a routine you are quite keen for your moment in the spotlight!  We’ve never had an adult student not take part in performances – however inexperienced or reserved at the beginning of term!

  • Is there an instalment plan for paying fees?

We don’t have an instalment plan as such.  We are a charity and run on tight margins, so need to know how much money we can count on for each term.  However, do contact the office in advance
if you want to discuss the possibility of phasing your payments.

  • How do your concessions work?

At present we offer concessionary rates for people who are out of work – that is, receiving Income Support or Job Seekers
Allowance; people who receive disability benefits, pensioners and people taking adult classes who are full-time students.
We try to follow the regulations used for free school meals as far
as possible so just being a student isn’t enough anymore – you have to show that you are in receipt of another benefit as well,
like housing benefit.

  • What are the bursaries?

Bursaries are for families on a low income who don’t qualify for
the concessionary price, and we have a limited number available each term.  Please contact the office if you’d like a bursary –
which means that you pay the concessionary price.  We’ll ask for some proof of your income and do as much to help as we can.
